Museum Potluck 4 PM at the C&R Hangar
Members & Friends
Members, well guess what? Would you believe that both Mike and I thought next week was the third Monday so that’s why you didn’t get your newsletter. We Screwed up. Sorry, Oh well time fly’s when you’re having fun.
Tim Griffith has been putting a lot of time in on the N3N project. It’s coming together one piece at a time and should be back on its gear shortly. Tim’s leaving for warmer weather soon, you know how old people are just like the birds, heading south.
At our meeting on the 16th we decided that we should have a get together on Saturday December 5. Families Welcome! Bring food or what ever. I’ll make my Chili (Hot), meat will be furnished, hotdogs for Shorty, Brats & Hamburgers for the rest of us. Be advised if you eat my Chili you won’t have to have you H1N1 Flu Shot.
Saturday Dec 5 is going to be a very busy day. I’ve made arrangements with Dick Drake to pick up his Donated Link Trainer that morning, so any way any volunteers to help with the loading of the Link Trainer get in touch with us before we head to Radcliff.
The Link Trainer came to life way back in 1929. However it didn’t catch on entirely for 10 years later approaching WWII on a way to train pilots with out tearing up real airplanes.
Helen Helsop has been doing her homework. Helen found a store that had much needed mannequins for sale. She & I went to visit an offset of Mr. B’s and purchased 6 full sized & 5 ½ sized mannequins for only $110.00. A good buy! Thanks Helen.
Saturday November 14th Mike and I hosted the Iowa Aviation Promotion Group at our Hangar. They originally planned for 35 attending. So we set up Tables and 38 Chairs. Well I don’t know if the word got out that there was going to be free food catered by HyVee or what but 70 people showed up.
Now for some History Facts
The B36 Bomber was equipped with 6 rear facing piston engines and 4 jet engines. The B36 was born during WWII but didn’t enter service until 1948. The B36 was to take the place of the 1rst Pressurized Bomber the B29. The B36 was retired after 12 years of service. The B47 followed & then the B52.
Speaking of Large Aircraft, it’s hard to believe the 747 turned 40 this year. It made its maiden voyage in 1969 from
Back to the archives again for this story.
It comes to us by the way of the Collins Library. This letter was published in the Collins Gazette Dec 10, 1942. It’s from the desk of Superintendent W.E. Young.
As we survey the first 12 months the war, person’s in all walks of life have made tremendous adjustments, and its likely many more will be necessary.
The Public Schools have assisted with the war progress in many ways, including supervised rationing programs, scrap and salvage drives, stamp and bond sales, and adjustments of school programs to train pupils for war time needs.
We are also faced with limitation of available supplies and equipment besides a serious shortage of trained teachers. Our teachers work has been increased as they have accepted additional loads. With winning the war as our goal, we must remember the purpose of the public schools is to train pupils for successful living after victory.
Then on March 1 1943 the Office of Defense Transportation ordered schools to make drastic cuts in school bus mileage. Students will be required to walk not more than mile and a half to meet the bus. This later was modified to say unless extreme adverse conditions exist, and buses were to avoid back tracking.
Now back to the present. As in the past there will be no meeting the month of December. You could say our December Meeting will be our December 5th get together.

We have had quite of progress on the N3N project in the last month. Tim has dedicated a lot of time and some $$ towards this project and we thank him for his efforts. This project like all of our projects takes lots of time and dedication to complete them. This aircraft is a rare aircraft and will be a welcome addition to our fleet. This aircraft will also be welcome at Flight Breakfasts and Air Show events. We recently took advantage of our newly donated trailer from Casey’s General Stores and made a temporary paint booth to paint the Landing Gear for the N3N. I had a little extra paint left over so I also put a coat of paint on the trailer Tung.
We have worked on the new trailer some and in need of finishing cleaning it up and repainting the Trailer Tung and rear bumper. Once we have it cleaned up we need to put the honor stickers on that Casey’s General Stores made for us.
We have lots of projects and anyone who has extra time on their hands can come out and help accomplish some of the things that need to get done.
We have a lot of little parts that need to be cleaned and painted for all of these projects. We also have a lot of extra parts that we can sell or trade for what we need and if these items are cleaned up they will be easier to sell. My plan is to set up our chat room to be able to sell and trade parts and other items for the museum. We can also list out our PX items for sale. Again all this type of work takes volunteers and time to do.
We need to start planning for a full sized Hangar for the Iowa Aviation Heritage Museum. We need to make a plan and start presenting it for funding and applications for Grants and seek corporate sponsorships. This kind of a venture will take planning and will have to be in a presentation that will be noticed. If anyone is interested in helping with the planning and presentation of this project thier help would be greatly appreciated. We need to have a good business plan and be able to present it to the business community in a professional matter. A good PowerPoint presentation that is not to long could also help and we can give a copy of it to some of the contacts we will be making to allow them to review with their board members who make the decisions on making donations to Non-Profit organizations like ours. It is very important that we emphasize our tributes to our Veterans both past and current. I believe we need to start a tribute to our current military veterans as they are giving of themselves today of what many of our veterans have done in the past. We are open to ideas for this. I would like us to come up with a memorial of some kind for the soldiers who have either gave their lives or have been injured during our current military conflicts.
LINK TRAINER
The World War II era brought orders for thousands of Link trainers from the
The complexity of flight simulators has grown with that of military and civilian aircraft. No one knows how many lives, aircraft and training dollars have been saved by flight simulators, but those savings can be traced back to Link's "Blue Box," which pointed the way to today's highly sophisticated and complex trainers.
I have created a chat room in Yahoo Groups for the museum members and other people who are interested. By creating the chat room we have a place where we can post an unlimited amount of pictures and anyone who is a member may post pictures or even create an album to post their own pictures. If you are interested, go to Yahoo Groups and search for http://groups.yahoo.com/group/IAHM/?yguid=339551054 and ask to join. If you have any questions you can send me an email at MLCallison@myway.com or michael.callison@yahoo.com The Website is showing lots of activity from all over the United States and many International Visitors.
There are always small tasks to be done general cleaning, setting up displays and organizing etc. If you are interested please come to the meeting or email Mike Callison at MLCallison@myway.com.
We have a website please check it out and sign the guestbook.

Iowa Aviation Heritage Museum is a young and growing museum in the heart of Iowa. We are looking for members and volunteers to help support and fund this museum to help make this into the one of the best in the Midwest. We are looking to acquire Aircraft and artifacts of history and display them for the public to view. If you are interested in being involved call Roger Pointer at 515-964-2629. We have already acquired many artifacts and a building at the Ankeny Regional Airport with many artifacts and Aircraft on display.
We would also like to thank Rasmussen Group, Casey's General Stores, Exec 1 Aviation and all the other people who have allowed us to live our dreams and have helped us get to where we are today. With out the cooperation of everyone we would not have the facilities or abilities to do the things we have done to date. Please remember to help keep things clean and show are appreciation for the facilities we use today.
