Iowa Aviation Heritage Museum Newsletter

July, 2008

Everyone please come to the July 21, 2008

Members & Friends

As Mike will inform you that the Ankeny Airport, the Aviation Community, and Exec 1 Aviation are grieving the loss of Ed Boesen.

Ed dropped by just last Saturday to check on the Pt-19 project. He showed great interest in the completion and in hosting a USO type dance & possible Flight Breakfast to commemorate the completion.

Thanks Ed for all your efforts in backing aviation interests and your support of the Iowa Aviation Heritage Museum.

July 5, Leo Griffieon’s family was in town for their family reunion and stopped by the museum to see the unveiling of Leo’s display. I really enjoyed the visit with the group & hope they come and visit again real soon. Leo’s daughter Sally Sonneburg of Urbandale shared Leo’s notes and photos with us. They included a copy in Leo’s handwriting of his bombing mission over Japan.

His last mission was the 16-17 hour flight to the northern most point in Japan to bomb the fuel & oil depots. His crew dropped 40 500 lbs bombs at 1-2 AM in the morning and was on their way back to Guam over the ocean when the war was declared over.

Thanks again Leo for all your efforts to end the war. You are still my hero!

Leo’s daughter Sally included in her gift a book entitled Yes, You can change the world. She feels this book depicts Leo’s life.

Chuck and Charles JR Taylor’s attended the Air show / Flight Breakfast July 12-13 at Tarkio, Mo. After expenses, drew about 6-700 dollars. Thanks Guys.

Don’t forget Fly Iowa Aug 8-9-10. Chuck say’s Saturday and Sunday will be the best days so forget Friday. Call Chuck if you want to help.

Also write down on your calendar Saturday September 20 Knoxville, IA. Flight Breakfast. They called and invited us to bring down our wares as they witnessed us at Iowa Falls on July 4.

By the way you missed a great Flight Breakfast at Iowa Falls July 4. They fed 1200 for breakfast. What a great tribute to the Airport. Only about 25 Fly ins the rest were all drive ins. What support by the community! We could only hope to have half that at Ankeny.

                                      Got to go for now

Don’t forget the 3rd Monday every month

That’s Monday July 21st is the General Museum Meeting.

                                                See You there

From the Volunteer Staff

We are deeply sorrowed over the passing of Ed Boesen. Ed’s passing was unexpected  and he will be greatly missed by all the people who have come to know him. He created a lot of enthusiasm and excitement at the Ankeny, Regional Airport. He was excited about the effort we have been putting forth with the museum. He had stopped by on Saturday to see how things were going for the museum and shared some ideas with us for helping to advertise and support some events. Such as the Flight Breakfast and USO Dance. Ed was a man of vision and supported the Des Moines community in many ways.

I can only believe that God felt he needed Ed’s enthusiasm and drive to help run God’s affairs like Ed ran his own affairs.

God Bless You, Ed, and your family.

We have been working Tuesday nights and Saturdays. We are still completing a lot of work on the Pt-19. Come to the July 21st meeting and see some of the progress. Thank God for our volunteer staff who have been getting a lot done! I want to thank the volunteers for their efforts. We are still planning on trying to get the Pt-19 done this summer. We have lots of projects but we also need to try to set a schedule for the Museum to be open. It would be nice if we could have 2 people at a time when the museum is open as it would help to have a little companionship along the way. There are always small tasks to be done general cleaning, setting up displays and organizing etc. If you are interested please come to the meeting or email Mike Callison at MLCallison@myway.com

We have a new website please check it out and sign the guestbook.

We would also like to thank Rasmussen Group, Casey's General Stores, Exec 1 Aviation and all the other people who have allowed us to live our dreams and have helped us get to where we are today. With out the cooperation of everyone we would not have the facilities or abilities to do the things we have done to date. Please remember to help keep things clean and show are appreciation for the facilities we use today.

From the Desk of Chuck Taylor

The museum PX is well supplied with a new series of easy-assemble models of popular WWII aircraft, as well as die cast models, and coloring books.

A new T-shirt is available with the museum logo over the heart on the front. A larger logo is on the back of the shirt with our PT-19 and the Navy SNJ in the middle of the logo. These will sell for $18 and hopefully will be worn by volunteers during hours the museum is open and at air shows. Sizes come in medium, large, XL and 2XL. Hopefully by early spring we will have children sizes available too.

Volunteers are needed to man the museum this summer during open hours as well as for a general cleanup prior to opening and any other special events such as an Open House, Fly-In, etc. Once a cleanup is completed it should then take minimal maintenance to keep our museum clean for public viewing.

Air shows are limited that allow us to have a PX on site. In order to generate revenue for a lot of museum projects, we need to bring more publicity to the museum on a continuing basis to bring in the public. An all out PR effort is being devised and we appreciate any and all comments on methods and means to be employed to promote our facility. Volunteers, particularly on Tuesday nights are busy with restoration efforts and need additional help also. For those that feel they are not qualified to work on aircraft, help in sprucing up the museum would be greatly appreciated.
